Range Sustainability for the NavyEM&A has provided on-site environmental support to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Ranges Sustainability Office (SO) since 1997. The office was previously known as the Operational Environmental Planning office at Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River until it became a part of the National Range Sustainability Office in November 2004. The SO plays a key role in monitoring encroachment factors putting pressure on the base and surrounding test range, and works to mitigate those factors. In this capacity, EM&A staff work closely with the NAVAIR research, development, test and evaluation squadrons, as well as with Air Operations, to evaluate upcoming test projects and programs, and to make proactive recommendations on how to minimize testing impacts on the surrounding communities in Southern Maryland. In addition, we work with several Program Managers, Air (PMAs; NAVAIR) to ensure that acquisition programs are conforming to all aspects of Environmental Safety and Occupational Health directives.
